Unknown – Untitled (1940-1950)

This untitled WPA-era urban rooftop watercolor was painted by a student at the Art Institute of Chicago, circa, 1940-1950; it is not signed. The image is displayed under glass with an acid-free black mat in a black wooden box. The matted image size is 8.5 inches by 11.5 inches, the total size of the image with the frame is 13 inches by 17 inches. This piece is in excellent condition.

This crisp and bright image featuring very nice detailing would make a particularly interesting addition to a WPA New Deal Federal Arts Project collection.

Joan Thorne – Untitled (1972)

This untitled painting is by Joan Thorne (1943- ), a well-listed American artist from New York, N.Y., known for her abstract, non-objective, modern, modernist, modernism artwork.

The medium appears to be a watercolor batik on canvas. The image has abstract light reddish pink and light gray brush strokes with a yellow border, and it is flush with the original wooden frame. The piece measures 20.5 inches by 20.5 inches, and it is signed and dated on verso in pen. The painting is in good condition with even fading of colors, which are much brighter than the photographs indicate.

Joan Thorne is a New York-based artist whose work is internationally recognized. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in New York City and throughout the United States, as well as in Europe, Latin America, and the Carribean. In 1998, her work was featured in two museum retrospective exhibitions in the Dominican Republic.
