Peggy Bacon – The Spirit of Rain (1936)


The Spirit of Rain is a black and white drypoint etching by Peggy Bacon (1895-1987), a well listed American artist, a printmaker, illustrator, and author of children’s books, who later produced watercolor, pastel, and oil paintings.

This image, printed in 1936 and published by Associated American Artists, is a piece of social realism from the + New Deal’s WPA and Federal Arts Project era.

The etching is under glass in the original AAA frame and has the traditional maroon AAA label on verso. It is newly mounted in a light gray acid-free mat and is signed and titled in pencil by the artist. The sheet size is 8 by 11.5 inches, the image size is 4 by 4.75 inches, and the total size is 15 by 19 inches. The piece is in excellent condition.
