Richard Florsheim (1916-1979)

Richard Aberle Florsheim (1916-1979) was a well listed American artist from Chicago, IL, known for his depictions of abstract urban and marine views in a style described as modern, modernist, and modernism.

Florsheim was born in Chicago, IL, and studied at the University of Chicago. He was active as a painter, sculptor and graphics artist in Chicago; Milwaukee, WI; Woodstock, NY; and Provincetown, RI. His career included the following:

  • teacher at the Contemporary Art Workshop in Chicago
  • teacher at the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee
  • assistant director of the Arts Center Association in Woodstock
  • member of the Chicago Society of Artists
  • member of the National Academy of Design
  • member of the Society of American Graphic Artists
  • board member of the Illinois Arts Council
  • Trustee and Vice President of the Provincetown Art Association

This painting by Jack Brusca (1939-1993) features a silver ring on a black background painted in oil in the Op-art style. This unique piece is signed and titled on verso. It is in excellent condition and is unframed, measuring 24 x 24 inches.

Provenance: Charak Modern Design acquired this piece at an auction house.

This abstract sculpture by Joel Graesser (1964?- ) is painted a subtle royal blue and appears to be constructed of iron or steel. It sits upon a similarly painted plinth. The signature has been either engraved or embossed in the sculpture.

Robert Motherwell – Africa Suite VII (1966)

This abstract screenprint by Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) is an original silkscreen printed in black and cream and collaged to a larger support sheet, framed behind glass in an aluminum frame. The piece is signed “Mother well” in plate; it is also initialed and numbered (84/150) in pencil. The print is in very good condition.

Original silkscreen printed in black and cream and collaged to a larger support sheet, 1966. 150 signed & numbered impressions, plus artist’s proofs (of which ours is one). Printed at Kelpra Studio, London and published by Marlborough Graphics. Printed on J. B. Green paper. It is also signed in the screen top left. Except for a small unobtrusive paper flaw in the upper left quadrant not visible in this photograph, this is a very good impression of this large print in very good condition. Image size: 810x603mm. Price: $5200.

Provenance: Charak Modern Design obtained Africa Suite VII from the estate of Florida artist Len Janklow in Tamarac, FL.
